Brief
To transform a bland, soulless pied-à-terre into a practical yet characterful London home which captured our clients’ personalities.
Design
Our starting point was our clients’ love of the William Morris wallpaper, which we used in the hall to create immediate impact and set the tone for the overall feel of the home.
The original layout meant that the apartment felt very dark. We added a Crittall panel and door into both the kitchen and the sitting room, creating an instant feeling of light and space upon entering.
The old, cramped kitchen was enlarged by knocking into the adjacent store room, and bespoke modern shaker cabinetry made effective use of every inch available. An extensive bespoke joinery package ensured optimum storage throughout the apartment.
The sitting room felt long and narrow, so we added a chimney breast and fireplace to create a focal point and to square off the room. Whilst we embraced rich colour, pattern and texture here, in contrast we used muted pinks, soft greens and small scale prints in the bedrooms to achieve the desired tranquil feel.
Client
A busy couple with multiple European homes, who required a welcoming London base.
Right from the start of our work with Ali and Alex we knew we were in safe but talented hands. They have transformed our dreary little flat into exactly what we wanted: a beautiful, comfortable and practical pied-à-terre. The team has been so responsive throughout with no dips in energy or enthusiasm for our project. Nothing was too much trouble and they were always happy to take on board our suggestions whilst offering loads of creative design ideas and sourcing innovative pieces we would never have found by ourselves. They have a great sense of texture and colour, and managed to get us out of our comfort zone by giving our spaces some modern zest but with a traditional feel. The team also has an address book of excellent builders and craftspeople. Always good humoured and happy to accommodate our availability, the Ottas were a joy to work with. Special mention for the brilliantly efficient Hannah who manages the office.
