Whether you want to add accents of colour or drench a space, the colour you choose to paint your joinery is key.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Make a room feel cosy
By painting the walls and joinery in this warm terracotta @farrowandball Picture Gallery Red, the library in our Battersea townhouse feels cosy and cocooning, the perfect place to snuggle up with a book and a drink

2. Big impact in a small bathroom
We painted this bespoke reeded vanity in the vibrant @Littlegreenepaintcompany Bronze Red which not only creates a bold statement but allows the bathroom to really sing thanks to the lack of clutter

3. Colour to guide you
In this dressing room which links both the en suite bathroom and bedroom, we painted the joinery in a dark blue @paintandpaperlibrary Kigali to act as an anchor to the lighter rooms either side whilst guiding the eye through the spaces

🌟Joinery for Small Spaces🌟

If budget allows, bespoke joinery can be the perfect solution for small or awkward spaces.

1. Storage in a narrow hallway
Where to store the keys and post in this narrow London townhouse? The beautiful bespoke reeded walnut console with a hidden drawer and red Rosso marble top solves all these problems

2. Place to put that glass of wine
Space to have a side table was limited in this sitting room, so the bespoke bookshelves were designed with a little pull out shelf for a cup of coffee or relaxing glass of wine. It’s all in the details!

3. Small bathrooms
This small bathroom is shared by two teenage girls so when we designed the joinery we incorporated a pull out laundry basket and plenty of eye level storage behind the mirrored doors for all their beauty products to be hidden. The mirrors also enhance the sense of space by making the room feel bigger

4. Reading Nooks
With a bookworm in the house, and a need for everyone to have their own space, we designed this cosy reading nook in this small loft bedroom, with plentiful bookshelves and storage beneath

We love to commission bespoke joinery at Otta Design and this gives us the opportunity to create something personal and unique for our clients.

Here are some tips and sources:

1. Contrast colour on internals
In this teenage girl’s bedroom, we kept the joinery and wall colour in a soothing neutral @farrowandball Skimming Stone but added a sense of playfulness and surprise by painting the internals in @littlegreenepaintcompany Orange Aurora. This kept the overall sense of calm without overpowering the room

2. Decorative Grilles
Our clients wanted a vanity that felt more like a piece of furniture than an off the shelf piece. We added delicate brass grilles to the glossy green doors that complement the classic Waterworks brassware to create an individual and timeless bathroom. Similar can be sourced @armacmartin

3. Rattan
This natural material infuses a space with warmth and texture. We added a contrast beading and a solid panel behind a sheet of rattan on these wardrobes to keep the contents hidden and dust free

4. Brass inlays
To add impact and elevate this masculine bathroom we added a brass inlay detail to provide a luxurious contrast to the natural grains and tones of the walnut on this bespoke vanity

🌟 Lighting Around Mirrors in Bathrooms 🌟
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Layered lighting throughout the bathroom will create a relaxed and rounded scheme, but also one that is functional. For the most flattering, shadow free and even glow, we use wall lights to provide task lighting and position them, where space allows, either side of a mirror at eye level and as close to your face as possible.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are some tips and sources:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. This double vanity is compact at 1300mm wide and its size wouldn’t allow for 2 individual mirrors above so we opted for one large mirror and these simple yet elegant wall lights by @fritz_fryer_lighting
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. In this compact bathroom we mirrored the entire wall above the vanity to enhance the sense of space, adding a pair of @pookylights wall lights with playful @loving_string shades on the adjacent walls
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
3. Here, the only place we could position our vanity was between two windows. The wall space above the vanity was too narrow for a mirror and wall lights either side so we chose a timeless coolie wall light from @hectorfinchlighting to sit above
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
4. This large bespoke double vanity at 1600mm wide enabled us to have 2 decent sized individual mirrors above. We added these 3 neat column wall lights from @hectorfinchlighting which don’t take up too much space and give light either side of each mirror to cast light evenly up and down the face

We always opt for warm white 2700k dimmable bulbs across all fittings and have the wall lights on a separate circuit (often with accent lighting around the bath and in alcoves and niches) to the ceiling lights

🌟 Patterned Tiles in Bathrooms 🌟

Not only do patterned tiles add impact but they can also be used cleverly to make a room feel larger or to create a focal point.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are some tips and sources:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Use larger patterns to make smaller bathrooms feel bigger
By using a larger pattern on the floor in this long and narrow bathroom we drew the eye through the room making it feel more spacious and open. We tiled over a wet room tray to achieve level entry and added a minimalist shower screen which creates more visible floorspace to further open up the space. These beautiful terrazzo tiles from @firedearthuk add a touch of opulence. Terrazzo tiles need to be sealed as the cement part of the terrazzo is susceptible to stains

2. Create a focal point around the bath
In this guest en suite we wanted to create a vibrant and uplifting mood reminiscent of being on holiday. We enveloped the whole bath area in these gorgeous hand painted tiles with colour and pattern inspired by Mexican ceramics from @firedearthuk. The glazed nature of the tiles means they are only suitable for walls and need to be sealed

3. Wrap tiles up from floor onto walls and use a tonal colour palette to make a room feel bigger
In this small en suite we maximised the space by creating a wet room rather than using a shower tray, and by wrapping the patterned floor tile up onto the shower walls. Using these tiles all over could feel too overwhelming so we broke them up with a tonal plain tile on the sink wall with a lighter toned paint above. These digitally printed porcelain tiles require the least maintenance as they don’t need sealing and will retain a more consistent look over time compared to cement or terrazzo versions @domustiles

🌟 Wallpaper in Bathrooms 🌟

These rooms can often feel quite stark with their cold, hard surfaces so bringing in pattern and texture with wallpaper can add warmth and help to soften any harshness.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Here are some tips and sources:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Vinyl wallpaper
As bathrooms are an area of high humidity and moisture, using a wallpaper with a vinyl coating or scrubbable finish will provide extra durability. We used this bold design by @Annawillmsdesigns in a family bathroom which only had a small window and young children splashing around. Our other go to vinyl suppliers are @Phillipjeffriesltd @thibaut_1886 @elitisfrance @lamaisonpierrefrey
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
2. Standard wallpaper
A properly ventilated bathroom can happily accommodate standard wallpaper outside of the wet areas. We would use an extra strong wallpaper adhesive to avoid lifting. Here we used a playful @ottolinedevries wallpaper on all walls, except the bath wall which we tiled in practical penny mosaics

3. Wallpaper above panelling
In a very small bathroom, we would recommend tiling or panelling up dado height and then adding wallpaper above to prevent it getting scuffed. In this narrow cloakroom used by a young family, we added tongue and groove panelling by @theenglishpanellingcompany, painted in eggshell for a durable finish, and then used a @ottolinedevries wallpaper above

4. Wallpaper with clear matt varnish
In this small understairs cloakroom the proportions didn’t lend themselves to dado height panelling, so instead we wallpapered all walls and the ceiling but added a coat of clear matt varnish (@polyvine_uk decorators varnish) rollered over the finished wallpaper around the sink to protect it against moisture. Here we have used a pretty floral @lamaisonpierrefrey wallpaper
